Wells Fargo names BNY’s Bridget Engle as new head of technology

Written by 1st August 2024

Industry veteran Bridget Engle has been named as the new senior EVP and head of technology of US banking giant Wells Fargo, effective 12 August 2024.

Engle, who has been tasked with overseeing “all technology” across the bank, will report directly to Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf and will also join the bank’s operating committee.

Wells Fargo highlights that its new head of technology brings over 30 years of expertise to the role, with vast experience “managing large, global technology organisations in complex financial institutions”.

Engle joins Wells Fargo directly from BNY, where she has served as chief information officer (CIO) for over seven years.

Prior to this, Engle worked at Bank of America, ending her tenure as the bank’s CIO of global banking and markets.

Alongside the appointment of Engle, Wells Fargo has also unveiled that Tracy Kerrins, the bank’s global CIO for the past four years, will now lead consumer technology and spearhead a new generative AI unit, reporting to Engle.

Speaking on both the leadership appointments and the bank’s AI strategy, Scharf states: “Generative AI can help us transform our businesses, improve our customer and client experiences, and enhance the way we work.

“Our new generative AI team will work closely with our data and technology platform management teams, as well as each business, on identifying and delivering on the potential of generative AI responsibly.

“We are fortunate to have someone with Tracy’s background in our company who is ready to take on this new role and lead our Consumer Technology team.”

With enhancing its AI capabilities high on the agenda, Wells Fargo formed a partnership with TradeSun in April, aiming to integrate TradeSun’s AI platform into its trade finance and compliance processes.
